Whether the disc is an audio CD, game disc, DVD or computer software
disc, the data is stored in a spiral track of pits molded into a plastic

Whether the disc is an audio CD, game disc, DVD or
computer software disc, the data is stored in a spiral track of pits
molded into a plastic layer. The laser lens system of the CD/DVD/video
game player reads the disc by passing a laser beam through the clear
plastic, reflecting off of an aluminum layer and hitting a device that
detects changes in light. When a scratch occurs, a ridge is formed in
the plastic layer on either side of the scratch. The laser lens is
unable to focus through those ridges, resulting in distortion, skipping
or freezing.
